Introduction
Joan was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). She suffered excruciating stomach pains that sent her to the emergency room. What Joan and her doctor didn’t realize was that her IBS symptoms were triggered by problems stemming from her mouth. Most of Joan’s back teeth were missing. Consequently, Joan was unable to chew her food properly; this did not cause, but exacerbated her IBS troubles.
Mike suffered from a loss of his sense of balance for years. He also had tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Doctors were unable to find the cause of his problems. Had Mike seen a dentist, he would have learned that his symptoms were typical of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD); a disorder that could have readily been cleared.
Randy had been on and off painkillers for months trying to deal with chronic sinus headaches. His physician found no sinus infection present. Yet the pain persisted. If Randy’s doctor had sent him to a dentist, the source of the pain could have been located: a tooth needed to be pulled, which was an upper molar positioned very close to the sinus area. The dentist might have saved Randy’s tooth along with his pain, but he had waited too long to seek proper treatment.
John felt constant discomfort in and around his teeth, yet neither his doctor nor his dentist could determine why. John’s mouth hosted a multitude of fillings and crowns. No work needed to be done. So why the pain? Sometimes pain from normal looking teeth can originate from currents generated by dissimilar metals in contact in the mouth. This is often the case when amalgam or “silver mercury” fillings sit next to a gold crown. Currents are given off that cause pain. Most health practitioners are unaware of this connection.
None of the people in the cases described above considered the fact their mouths could be the cause of their maladies. What would you think if I told you every single person has the ability to look inside his or her body and get a bird’s eye view towards what state of health he or she is in? In this book I will show you how. Taking responsibility for your health is more crucial these days than ever before. To take responsibility you must first learn to recognize the distress signs of your body. If you wait until you’re sick and depend totally on your health care practitioner, you probably won’t be getting the best treatment you deserve. And you won’t learn how to prevent that same condition from returning.
There are many books written today about how modern medicine has failed to help us truly cure and prevent disease. In his book How Doctors Think, Dr. Jerome Groopman cites case study after case study, questioning the performance and fallibility of doctors. Dr. Groopman, a Harvard Medical School professor, exposes how premature conclusions and snap decisions can easily lead to wrong diagnoses. He writes that often doctors’ egos and arrogance get in the way of listening to each patient. Most physicians regard patients using stereotypical thinking, rather than on an individual basis. This can also apply to the dental profession.
Knowledge of a coming storm helps us prepare for disaster; knowledge into the gateway of the body, helps us seek early treatment and possibly even prevent disease.
The main gateway to the body is through our mouths. Consider why it is the gateway:
The mouth is the entrance to the body.
Digestion starts here. Breakdown of carbohydrates begins with salivary amylase. Saliva also lubricates food and allows for easy swallowing. Missing, painful teeth make it difficult to begin digestion properly.
Studies confirm there is a direct correlation between oral health and general health. For example, gum disease increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, problem
pregnancies, pancreatic cancer, respiratory disease and other systemic diseases. Not only can some diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis be diagnosed through the mouth, but poor oral health can worsen many systemic diseases.
Saliva provides the means for early detection of many conditions and disease. It’s easy to take a saliva sample, and by analyzing its composition, it provides one means of diagnosing. Diagnosing through saliva has not yet been approved by the FDA, but once it is, it will provide a quick, easy tool for diagnosing disease.
Saliva is also helpful to determining the body’s pH level and body chemistry for general health.
We internalize stress through the mouth by clenching and grinding, which can result in recession of the gums, migraine headaches, and numerous muscular skeletal disorders, among other symptoms.
How we feel is immediately evident through the expression of our smile or frown; our confidence is enhanced or diminished through how we feel our teeth appear to others. Do our teeth reflect health and beauty or decay and disease? This aspect can surely affect our emotional, mental and spiritual growth.
In other words, the mouth is a strong barometer of total
human health: mental, emotional, physical and even spiritual, with the first signs of many conditions appearing initially in the mouth. The mouth gives us a glimpse into our general health and must not be ignored or diminished to a repository of teeth needing cleaning or fillings.
For centuries Chinese medical practitioners have made diagnoses of various organs of the body by looking at the mouth. Chinese medicine developed an elaborate system to describe the condition of the tongue, including the color, texture, shape, size and coating. They also included each part of the tongue as corresponding to the condition of an organ. For instance, the tip of the tongue represents the heart and lung organs. Even in our western medicine, the tongue is frequently part of the diagnosing process as a symptom or a primary disease. The term “glossitis” refers to an inflammation or infection of the tongue caused by medication, vitamin deficiency, allergies to toothpaste, iron deficiency anemia, or pernicious anemia. This can also occur with other conditions such as psoriasis and diabetes.
In the 1950s, Dr. Reinold Voll, a German doctor, developed a device that could be combined with traditional acupuncture and called his method “Electro-acupuncture According to Voll” or EAV. His theory stated there is an energetic, dynamic balance between human organs and tissue and the acupuncture points. His device measured changes in electrical conductivity at the acupuncture points on the skin of the hands and feet, using a point electrode. Dr. Voll also found that every tooth relates to different organs and tissues within the body. This was the birth of energy medicine, with the mouth taking center stage towards the diagnosing of disease.
With this book, I put into your hands the key to a healthy, beautiful body, by teaching you to better understand the gateway to your health - the mouth. With this knowledge, you will be capable of detecting early warning signs of ill health. You will learn to take responsibility for your own health and be able to determine the things necessary for you to develop self-help through proper diet and nutrition, including appropriate foods and supplements.
Another important tool you will learn is an understanding of the many types of personal care products. You will be able to recognize the ingredients contained in these products which may adversely affect your health. My goal is that you not get swayed by clever product marketing ads or trends, but instead make wise decisions about what you put on or in your body based on need and on evaluating ingredients listed on labels. Many personal care products, natural or synthetic, contain questionable ingredients you should be aware of. For example, antibiotics and antifungal agents, in natural and synthetic forms, are often used in many personal care products, including soaps and toothpaste. Purchasing wisely for your family may prevent side effects and allergies. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, allergies affect as many as 40 to 50 million people in the United States. These statistics also reveal allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the United States. The cause of many allergies remains a mystery.
If the body is diseased, all the money in the world will not give us peace and happiness. Provided we help support the essentials which all of us have been born with, a lifetime of happiness can be ours through health and therefore peace of mind, body and spirit. Your part as a consumer is to learn to detect early signs of illness and learn to become a partner with your dentist, your physician and other healers. In this way, you will bring your body back into perfect health simply and safely through a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
